ABOUT THE MATCH
India continued its dream 2017 and beat Sri Lanka 2-1 in an ODI series that started off with promise but ultimately proved to be completely one-sided. They have now unveiled a young, experimental squad for the T20 internationals and a new look Indian side will be on display. Sri Lanka meanwhile continues to search for answers and will hope that a turn to the shortest format of the game brings a change in their fortunes as well.
The Indian team for this series has been selected keeping in the unavailability of certain players as well as with an aim to give the players on the fringe some game time. Shreyas Iyer, Basil Thampi, Washington Sundar, Mohammad Siraj, Deepak Hooda, and Jayadev Unadkat all find a place in this squad.
Rohit Sharma will be the leading the team and be the guiding light for this bunch of IPL performers. His own form has been brilliant as evidenced by the brilliant double century he hit. Rohit Sharma also had a good time in the T20’s against New Zealand but getting off to faster starts has been something that he needs to work on.
Lokesh Rahul seems to be the most likely candidate to open the innings with Rohit Sharma followed by Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, and maybe Dinesh Karthik. There is a case to be made for playing with both Washington Sundar and Deepak Hooda in the team but we don’t think it is likely to happen.
The bowling will be led by Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvebdra Chahal, two bowlers that have now established themselves as the first choice for India in limited overs cricket, and supported by Basil Thampi, Mohammad Siraj, and the all-rounders.
This is by no means a weak Indian side but neither is it the strongest. The Indian batting is going through a bit of a rebuilding phase in the limited overs game and while Shreyas Iyer has shown some good signs, none of the other the batsmen have really made positions their own.
An early wicket of Rohit Sharma will put pressure on the Indian batting and could alter the final total in a big way.
The bowling is similarly green, however with all the players having the experience of playing against the best players in the world, we feel they will be able to put up a good show. Basil Thampi impressed everyone with the ability to bowl fast yorkers and will certainly be one to look out for.
Thisara Perera impressed with his captaincy in the ODI’s and showed that he is not afraid to take the game to India. He is hamstrung by the lack of top-quality resources at his disposal but he is ready to play the game with an intent to win.
We continue to like the look of the batting side that Sri Lanka has assembled. They were doing well in the first half of the final ODI before a mid-innings collapse stopped them in their tracks.
In the T20 over format, they will be able to go hard at the bowling and not have to worry about falling short of playing the full quota of overs. Upul Tharanga was in sublime touch and he will be the most dangerous batsman for India once again. With batsmen like Gunathilaka, Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella, and Asela Gunaratne also in the lineup, the Sri Lankan batting should be able to compete well.
Sri Lanka is also playing a full strength team and will be peeved that India does not consider them strong enough to be putting its best players on the park. This is something that should motivate them to give their best and hope to put the young Indian cricketers under pressure.
The Sri Lankan bowling continues to be its Achilles heel and a lack of options could be the reason behind them choosing an abundance of all-rounders rather than pure bowlers. If the Islanders are going to win this series against India then they will need to depend on their batting rather than the bowlers because apart from Akila Dananjaya and maybe Vishwa Fernando we do not see anyone challenging the Indian batting.
PITCH AND CONDITIONS
The last international match played here was between India and England where nearly 800 runs were scored so we can expect plenty of runs in this game as well. The weather is predicted to be ideal for cricket with no chance of rain on the horizon.
India has beaten Sri Lanka in four of their last five matches with all the recent four being victories. Even though India is a depleted side for this series we think their reserves will be enough to hand Sri Lanka a fifth consecutive defeat in T20 cricket.
