Guyana Amazon Warriors’ see-saw run continued as they succumbed to yet another unexpected loss in the Caribbean Premier League. Their loss pushed St Lucia Zouks to the second spot on the ladder and all six teams are still well and truly in contention to finish in the top four.

These are early days in the competition, but we already have Jamaica Tallawahs taking on Guyana Amazon Warriors for the second time in the tournament so far. This match, however, is to be played at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain in Trinidad on 25th August. The two teams met each other just a couple of days ago and produced a low-scoring thriller. Guyana Amazon Warriors defied Russell’s blitz to register a stunning win, defending the lowest total in the history of CPL. While the Tallawahs will be itching to avenge their defeat, the Warriors, too, will be looking at this game as an opportunity to bounce back to the winning ways. We expect yet another thrilling encounter in Caribbean Premier League, which is getting increasingly interesting with every passing match.

Before the tournament started, Jamaica Tallawahs were expected to do better than they did last year. They finished at the bottom of the table last year and started off on a brilliant note in this edition. However, two back to back losses have raised multiple question marks on the future in the tournament. They are currently placed at the fourth spot on the ladder, with only net run-rate separating them and the Tridents.

The Tallawahs are coming off a heart-wrenching win, wherein their batsmen failed to take them across after a fantastic display by their bowlers. The Tallawahs were in the driving seat at the half-way stage in the match, needing only 119 to register a win. They had a worst possible start as Chadwick Walton was trapped in front by Chris Green. Nkrumah Bonner and Glenn Phillips followed Walton soon thereafter as Tallawahs found themselves reeling at 4 for 3 and a minuscule target now looking to be gigantic.

Even though Asif Ali and Rovman Powell strung a partnership to bring them back on track, the runs they scored came at snail’s pace. The required run-rate climbed as Andre Russell was left to do an impossible task after Brathwaite was dismissed for 14-ball 5. Tallawahs needed 67 off 28 balls when Russell began his counter-attack and was looking in ominous form, but a brilliant second-last over from Naveen kept him off-strike for the last over, which was delivered perfectly by Keemo Paul. Russell got to his fifty, but Tallawahs fell short by 14 runs.

Jamaica Tallawahs, in the tournament so far, has shown fine glimpses, but they have been far and few. Andre Russell finally found his Midas touch after back to back unsuccessful outings and could be a key to Tallawahs’ fortunes in the upcoming matches. With the likes of Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Sandeep Lamichhane, Jamaica Tallahwas have a well-balanced bowling attack, but their batting appears to be a little too over-reliant on Andre Russell.
Even though Guyana Amazon Warriors have two wins to their name and are sitting pretty at the third spot on the points table, they have plenty of questions left to answer. They have struggled to maintain consistency in their performances and their reliance on Shimron Hetmyer has been apparent.

The Warriors are coming into this game on the back of a narrow loss against St Lucia Zouks. While it would have been disheartening to be at the receiving end of the result, there were a few encouraging signs seen for the Warriors in that match – the most important of those being the contribution from their lower middle-order. The Warriors stayed within the striking distance of the chase despite losing the likes of Taylor, Hetmyer, and King early and would be relieved to see Nicholas Pooran and Sherfaine Rutherford getting some runs.

Bowling first against the Zouks, Guyana Amazon Warriors had a pretty good day with the ball. Imran Tahir looked at his lethal best and emerged as the best bowler for them, picking up 3 for 22 in his four overs. He was ably supported by Chris Green as they kept the Zouks’ scoring-rate in check in the opening few overs. Ashmead Nedd, who played an instrumental role in Guyana’s win over the Tallawahs, produced yet another stunning performance as he returned with the figures of 4-0-20-1.

They had a modest target of 145 runs to chase down and with the likes of Hetmyer, Pooran, Taylor, and King, it appeared to be a walk in the park. However, some irresponsible batting by their top order coupled with fantastic bowling by the Zouks’ spinners pulled the game away from the Warriors. After a dreadfuls start, Pooran managed to pull his team out of the hole, but he, along with Rutherford, perished towards the end of the innings as the Warriors failed to get over the line.

All in all, Guyana Amazon Warriors’ tournament so far has been a mixed bag. They have enjoyed moments of brilliance and have also seen the rock-bottom. They’ll be, however, relieved to see their lower middle-order performing and that would take some pressure off Hetmyer in the upcoming matches. Despite a couple of disappointing results, Guyana Amazon Warriors appears to be a strong team on paper, and getting past them will be a hard task for the Tallawahs.

There has been a string of successful defenses over the past couple of matches. Much of that had to do with surface getting slower and lower and no dew to deal with for the teams defending. With the weather expected to take a turn and bright sunshine expected during the day, we expect there to be dew at night. In addition to that, the surface is likely to be quicker and have even pace and bounce. With those factors in mind, the captain winning the toss is expected to field first.

Weather in Trinidad has been a bit uncertain over the past few days, but there is likely to be less rain and more sunshine over the next week. The other major change we are likely to see is the nature of the surface. The surface at Queen’s Park Oval is going to be relatively fresh and batting won’t be as difficult as it was at Brian Lara Cricket Academy. Having said that, we still expect spinners to have an edge over the fast bowlers. There are high-chances of dew to have an impact as well and defending a total isn’t going to be easy. The team batting first should be looking to put at a total of at least 170 runs on the board.

The upcoming match will be Guyana’s second game in a couple of days and they won’t really have much time to reflect upon their performance in their last match. On the other hand, Jamaica Tallawahs last played a match a couple of days ago and is expected to be fresher of the two sides. While the Warriors have a better-balanced unit on paper, their batsmen have failed to fire in the tournament so far. The Tallawahs appear to be a bit too over-reliant on Andre Russell. Both sides have done incredibly well with the ball and considering that the team that bats well in the upcoming match is likely to take the two important points. With a better-balanced unit and Nicholas Pooran back in form, we think that the Warriors are better placed to emerge on top yet again.
