They finished at the bottom of the table last year and started off on a brilliant note in this edition. However, two back to back losses have raised multiple question marks on the future in the tournament. Even though Guyana Amazon Warriors have two wins to their name and are sitting pretty at the third spot on the points table, they have plenty of questions left to answer. They have struggled to maintain consistency in their performances and their reliance on Shimron Hetmyer has been apparent.

The Warriors are coming into this game on the back of a narrow loss against St Lucia Zouks. While it would have been disheartening to be at the receiving end of the result, there were a few encouraging signs seen for the Warriors in that match – the most important of those being the contribution from their lower middle-order. The Warriors stayed within the striking distance of the chase despite losing the likes of Taylor, Hetmyer, and King early and would be relieved to see Nicholas Pooran and Sherfaine Rutherford getting some runs.

Bowling first against the Zouks, Guyana Amazon Warriors had a pretty good day with the ball. Imran Tahir looked at his lethal best and emerged as the best bowler for them, picking up 3 for 22 in his four overs. He was ably supported by Chris Green as they kept the Zouks’ scoring-rate in check in the opening few overs. Ashmead Nedd, who played an instrumental role in Guyana’s win over the Tallawahs, produced yet another stunning performance as he returned with the figures of 4-0-20-1.

They had a modest target of 145 runs to chase down and with the likes of Hetmyer, Pooran, Taylor, and King, it appeared to be a walk in the park. However, some irresponsible batting by their top order coupled with fantastic bowling by the Zouks’ spinners pulled the game away from the Warriors. After a dreadfuls start, Pooran managed to pull his team out of the hole, but he, along with Rutherford, perished towards the end of the innings as the Warriors failed to get over the line.

All in all, Guyana Amazon Warriors’ tournament so far has been a mixed bag. They have enjoyed moments of brilliance and have also seen the rock-bottom. They’ll be, however, relieved to see their lower middle-order performing and that would take some pressure off Hetmyer in the upcoming matches. Despite a couple of disappointing results, Guyana Amazon Warriors appears to be a strong team on paper, and getting past them will be a hard task for the Tallawahs.
